A man in Guangdong shocked the Internet on September 16 after posting a picture of a turtle he rescued followed by turtle soup pictures the next morning.

Mr. Wu, whose Weibo summary reads ‘Guangdong famous chef,’ saved the struggling turtle in Zhongshan after heavy rain flooded into a pumping station. After the rescue mission, Wu posted on his WeChat a picture of the helpless little one, informing his friends of the good deed.

This is where things get weird. The new turtle owner posted another picture that next morning of what appeared to be turtle soup, commenting underneath, “I’m a heartless Guangdong man.” Netizens were up in arms, starting the hashtag ‘a heartless Guangdong man’ that gained over 88 million views and 20,000 comments.

But, did he really eat the turtle?

No, the turtle was safe all along!

Wu grabbed a photo off Baidu and shared it on WeChat, which turned him from a hero to a villain overnight. He turned to Weibo to post, “The turtle is doing well, everybody can relax,” further commenting that the turtle soup post was just for kicks.

This man, a savage prankster in all, pulled a fast one on everyone.

One netizen commented what we are all probably thinking, “Please take a daily photo of the turtle, so the Internet can monitor it. Otherwise you might just eat it.”
