Orange rainstorm warnings were issued in several Guangzhou districts last night, as torrential rains, blasts of lightning and deafening thunder hammered the city. According to local media reports, areas affected by the warning included Tianhe, Liwan, Yuexiu and Huangpu districts.
While your WeChat Moments was undoubtedly overrun with photos of flooded roadways and apartment complexes, one photo in particular stood out to us. The image above is of a pedestrian underpass near Keyun Lu Metro Station, which, as you can see, is flooded from floor to ceiling.
According to YangCheng Group, a drainage worker at the flooded tunnel noted “the water is really stinky, very stinky. On the water's surface you can see all kinds of garbage.”
Didi queues suffered heavily from the deluge, with a two-hour wait in the Tiyu Xilu area last night (432 ride requests when we attempted to secure a Didi at 11pm). Taxis, as you’d expect, were shady as hell in Zhujiang New Town, demanding exorbitant rates for a ride.
For those adversely affected by last night’s downpour, it’s worth noting that thundershowers are currently forecast in Guangzhou every day until September 12.
