That's PRD takes a look at the best live performances happening this weekend in Guangzhou:
Fri, Aug 24: Pocari Sweet @ 191 Space
Playfully named after the refreshing Japanese drink Pocari Sweat, this band out of Fuzhou have been making waves for the past few months, with a spate of concerts in Shanghai and Fujian already under their belts. Pocari Sweet will be joined by rising local indie band Hoo! and one-man band Smelly Hoover, both of whom are worth checking out.
Fri Aug 24, 7.30pm; RMB50 presale, RMB70 at the door. 191 Space. See event listing. Tickets.
Sun, Aug 26: Straight Fire Gang @ T:union
The public perception of rap music seems to have come full circle, with the recent return of the highly successful talent show, The Rap of China. Straight Fire Gang are a trio of rappers whose influence comes directly from North American rap music, having originally formed while the three members were foreign students in America. With bilingual lyrics, and more pop culture references than a Chuck Klosterman book, Straight Fire Gang are not a group to be missed.
Sun Aug 26, 8pm; RMB180 presale, RMB200 at the door. T:union. See event listing. Tickets.
Sun, Aug 26: Tumour Boy @ Mao Livehouse
As the summer continues to wind down, so too does Guangzhou’s festival season. In the grand old tradition of capturing every last ounce of sun and fun before returning to school, why not head down to Mao Livehouse this Sunday to catch local bands Disanxian from Shenzhen and Die!ChiwawaDie! of Guangzhou as they take the stage alongside legends of the gritty and grimy world of trash metal in Japan’s Terror Squad, Hong Kong’s Miserable Pig and Nanchang’s Bursting Band.
Sun Aug 26, 7.30pm; RMB120 limited presale, RMB150 presale, RMB170 at the door. Mao Livehouse. See event listing. Tickets.
