Guangzhou police are investigating a ‘crash-for-cash’ scam in the city, after a woman intentionally pushed her young son in front of an oncoming van.

In surveillance footage of the incident, the lady can clearly be seen pushing her offspring into the vehicle’s path. The boy reacted defensively, putting his hands out in front of him, and was not directly hit by the van.

However, that didn’t deter the woman from trying to score a bit of sweet ol’ compensation, as she then threw herself beneath the van and feigned an injury. The footage also shows a witness who, after witnessing the debacle, approaches the boy and holds his hand while watching the mother flop around like a wounded carp.

According to AsiaOne, the stunt was an attempt to extort money from the driver. Authorities are treating the incident as a crash-for-cash scheme.

Crash-for-cash – known in China as ‘pengci’ – is the act of deliberately putting oneself in front of a moving vehicle with the intention of being hit, in order to demand compensation.
