Tue-Wed, Aug 14-15: Dark Circus by Stereoptik
Telling stories with sand, ink, paper and a healthy dose of imagination, French visual artists Jean-Baptiste Maillet and Romain Bermond create something magical for theater audiences. The duo also utilizes shadows, objects, puppets, silent films, fairy tales and cartoons in their performances, which are accompanied by improvised music. Dark Circus is Millet and Bermond’s first scripted performance.

Sat, Aug 18: Liquid Oxygen Can
Liquid Oxygen Can is deemed the most ‘Eastern’ band of all the Chinese neoclassical metal bands: their sound is infused with musical elements such as the dagu, a large drum played with two sticks. Over their 17-year career, the seven-member rock band have established themselves as a leader of heavy metal and rock and roll in the Middle Kingdom. Check them out this weekend as they tour for their latest album, Call to Arms.

Sat, Aug 18: Castle in the Sky Concert
The greatest works of Japanese animation legend Hayao Miyazaki come to life this month at Xinghai Concert Hall in an audiovisual extravaganza. Performers from some of the country’s best conservatories will come together to deliver a sensational, family-friendly musical performance featuring music from such classics as Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro and Valley in the Sky.
