Tue, Jul 3: Idea Exchange
This week, Idea Exchange has invited Dr. Joey Sum, an anthropologist from the University of New Mexico who has spent months researching in Yunnan’s Lugu Lake area, to present on the increasing popularity of ethnic tourism. Dr. Sum will also discuss how tourism is a threat to the traditional lifestyle of the Mosuo minority group, as well as the area's environment features.

Thu, Jul 5: Destined for Greatness
Leeza Gordon, the woman at the forefront of an artistic group called Destined For Greatness (DFG), has been organizing art shows and speaking events in Guangzhou since the beginning of 2017. According to Gordon, the heart of DFG is diversity and the group’s most recent art exhibition included artists from around the globe. This week, DFG presents 'The Sound of Awakening,' an event that will feature a motley crew of performers and presenters, from a motivational speaker to a DJ.

Fri, Jul 6: E321
With influence from both post-rock and shoegaze, E321 was born in the Swedish industrial city of Vasteras in 2011 and went on to release their first, homemade EP – Among the Trees – the next year. It wasn’t until the end of 2014 that the band released their debut album – Id, a portrayal of humankind’s most primitive thoughts and feelings. Head down to SD Livehouse to witness E321’s first-ever Guangzhou performance.

Sat, Jul 7: Totalfat
With deep influences from heavy metal bands like Avenged Sevenfold and Motley Crue, Totalfat are masters of solo-focused punk rock, as demonstrated on their album For Whom the Rock Rolls. A foursome from Japan, Totalfat formed in 1999 and have since become one of the dominant forces in Japan’s rock music scene. Headbangers will not want to miss this energetic act when it (rocks and) rolls into town this weekend.

Sat, Jul 7: St. Florian Boys’ Choir
Based in St. Florian Monastery in Austria, the St. Florian Boys’ Choir is esteemed and time-tested, boasting nearly a thousand years of history. In addition to performing sacred music at the monastery, the prestigious boys’ choir is also known for their global tours. This week, catch the lads performing live at Guangzhou’s Xinghai Concert Hall.

Sat-Sun, Jul 7-8: DIY Woodworking Shop
Spend this weekend camping and learning the craft of woodwork at Cliff Haus, a campsite located in a part of Qingyuan oft referred to as ‘small Yangshuo.’ This weekend’s woodworking seminar is only open to adults and will teach participants to how to make a chair, tea table or swing out of bamboo and other wood products. Sun, Jul 8: Ryo Natoyama
Japanese ukulele performer Ryo Natoyama was a child prodigy, having started performing at age 14. With nine albums released to date, Natoyama is active on stage the world over. This week, he is set to visit Guangzhou and meet the city’s ukulele lovers.

Ongoing: Let’s Talk About the Weather Exhibition
Let’s Talk About the Weather is an exhibition that includes local and international artists, architects, thinkers and activists, showing both existing and newly commissioned work. The project raises pertinent questions about how we understand ‘nature,’ our relationship to the non-human, the relationship of climate change to social, political and economic conflicts, epistemic hierarchies and alternative ways of co-inhabiting the planet. The diverse artistic practices within the exhibition have been framed through four themes: Contaminated Civilization, Mapping Matter, Energetic Histories and Archeology of the Future.

Ongoing: New Menu at The Connoisseur
One of Guangzhou’s finest steakhouses, The Connoisseur at LN Garden Hotel recently debuted its new summer menu to the delight of local gastronomists. The hotel’s seasoned executive chef, Robert Conaway, presents the most iconic culinary specialties from his hometown – San Diego, California. Menu highlights include succulent Canadian scallops with lemongrass foam and kaffir lime meringue, beef carpaccio, baked oysters with king crab meat, smoked and slow-cooked Wagyu tri-tip and American Black Angus boneless short ribs.
