That's PRD takes a look at the best live music performances happening this weekend in Guangzhou:
Fri, Jun 1: City Flanker @ T:union
Shaoxing’s favorite shoegazers City Flanker return to Guangzhou this weekend with a new physical release and, ostensibly, a new record label in tow. Having released their fantastic 2017 album Sound Without Time via Ruby Eye Records, it seems that City Flanker have made the leap from independent to signed act in short measure, and it’s no surprise given that they are one of the foremost acts at the head of China's emerging shoegaze music movement.
Jun 1, 8.30pm; RMB60 presale, RMB80 at the door. T:union. See event listing. Tickets.
Sat, Jun 2: Leo Kalyan @ Mao Livehouse
British-Pakistani artist Leo Kalyan brings his alternative R&B stylings to Mao Livehouse this weekend. Kalyan’s music sounds an awful lot like FKA Twigs, Autre Ne Veut or Petite Noir, although he claims to have first been inspired by a completely different type of musician – M.I.A. His star has risen on the backs of some fantastically spacious and ambient songs over the past three years and, at his upcoming perfomance in Guangzhou, you can expect tracks that will stay in your head for days to come.
Jun 2, 8.30pm; RMB120 presale, RMB150 at the door. Mao Livehouse. See event listing. Tickets.
Sat, Jun 2: Cui Jian @ Guangzhou Gymnasium
The Father of Chinese Rock, Cui Jian has been releasing music since 1984. Although not as prolific as he once was, Cui Jian often plays stadiums and festivals around the country. This is a treat for anyone keen to understand the history of music in China, and Cui Jian’s stadium rock ballads should easily fill out Guangzhou Gymnasium’s spacious performance space.
Jun 2, 7.30 pm; RMB580-980. Guangzhou Gymnasium. See event listing. Tickets.
Tue, Jun 5: Sleep Party People @ Mao Livehouse
While Sleep Party People uses a symbol akin to the Donnie Darko rabbit mask to differentiate himself from the glut of dream pop artists out there, the Danish artist’s music is less Echo & The Bunnymen and more in line with the likes of Youth Lagoon or Wild Nothing. Support on the night will be provided by Guangzhou’s Nein or Gas Mus. Turn out for this one early, as a big crowd is expected.
Jun 5, 8.30pm; RMB100 presale, RMB120 at the door. Mao Livehouse. See event listing. Tickets.
