Who said high tea is only for adults? Starting from Children’s Day on June 1, Mandarin Oriental, Guangzhou will offer a creative afternoon tea set to delight your little ones at The Taikoo Lounge. Malaysian pastry chef Mak creates a fun and exclusive ‘Little MO’ tea set that includes a pink piggy macaroon, mini bear on wheels, blueberry frozen yogurt fruit pop, strawberry and apple crisps, a homemade milkshake and more. Not only is the tea set pleasing to the eye, it will also sate children’s appetites while indulging their sweet tooth.

Fri-Sun, Jun 1-3: The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time

This play is a successful stage adaptation of its namesake novel. It is presented as a play-within-a-play, rather than the first-person narrative featured in the book, telling stories about a 15-year-old amateur detective named Christopher John Francis Boone who is a mathematical genius and appears to have an unspecified autism spectrum disorder. This seven-time Oliver Award winner is to be staged in Guangzhou from June 1-3.

Fri-Sun Jun 1-3, 7.30pm; RMB80-880. Guangzhou Opera House. See event listing. Tickets

Sat, Jun 2: Cui Jian

Considered a pioneer of Chinese rock music, Cui Jian has been an icon in the Chinese rock 'n' roll scene for two decades. It was he who first introduced Chinese audiences to rock music in the ’80s. Cui lives out the philosophy expressed in his music. His band has traveled with him across China, America, the UK, Japan, Italy and many other countries. Come out for an upbeat night of live music with Cui Jian at Guangzhou Gymnasium this week.

Sat Jun 2, 7.30pm; RMB580-980. Guangzhou Gymnasium. See event listing. Tickets

Sat, Jun 2: Leo Kalyan

A child of East London’s electronic dance scene, Kalyan fuses trip-hop sound with influences from classical Indian music, Bollywood and R&B artists. His emotive, authentic pop is fueling a rise to his star that’s earned him a spot on the BBC 1Xtra playlist, funding from PRS Music Foundation and a spot at SXSW. The fact that he’s acheived all this as a gay Muslim musician while consistently resisting being pigeonholed by the industry is another accomplishment in itself.

Sat Jun 2, 8.30pm; RMB120 presale, RMB150 at the door. Mao Livehouse. See event listing. Tickets

Sun, Jun 3: Bravo Beer Hour – Blind Taste Test

brovo-beer-challenge.jpg

Reckon you possess a discerning palate when it comes to telling ales from lagers, or porters from stouts? Put that fine-tuned tongue of yours to the test with Bravo’s 'Beer Hour.' Each Sunday, you can bet your free beer token on a blind taste test. If you guess the beer correctly, your next drink is on the house! If you fail to identify the suds in your glass, you forfeit your token. Losers, though, will be contributing to a good cause: if you lose your free beer token, Bravo will donate RMB1 to an animal welfare charity. Anyone who buys a beer at Bravo is eligible to take part in the game.

Sun Jun 3, 11-1am. Bravo. See event listing

Sun, Jun 3: String Quartet Concert by the Ensemble Philéas

Ensemble Philéas, composed of musicians from Radio France orchestras and leading French soloists, was started by Vincent Dormieu. Audience members at this concert can expect four talented musicians delivering a “rich and demanding repertoire,” according to festival organizers. The ensemble will be paying homage to Claude Debussy by presenting ‘Quartet in G Minor Op. 10,’ the French master’s only quartet composition.

Sun Jun 3, 8pm; RMB80-380. Xinghai Concert Hall. See event listing. Tickets
