Riddle us this: ‘a quintet we be, immortal possibly, geoponics we give thee, a temple to us maybe, what are we?’ Or, where in Guangzhou is this building?

Stumped? You’re not the only one. There are places in Canton that even the most seasoned Guangzhouers might not have seen. That’s why Bowtie History and The Happy Monk have teamed up to host ‘The Photo Scavenger Hunt: Happy Hunting Edition’ on May 27. If you love watching The Amazing Race, now’s your chance to test your mental mettle and join the fun.

It takes brains and wit to solve these puzzles. That’s why you need a team. Grab your closest friends or smartest colleagues and decipher clues together (or breakdown and use your phones). The riddles will lead you on a quest around the city, looking for sites hidden amongst the old and new skyline.

The day begins at The Happy Monk Jianwu (Taojin) location, where participants meet their teams, or join up with one, over discounted drinks and food. Get to know the competition and form a strategy with your teammates as you receive the official instructions. The race commences at 2pm.

You and your team will have from 2-5pm to race around the city, deciphering clues as you go and trying to stay one step ahead of the others. When you solve a puzzle, you’ll be required to take a photo as evidence.

The list of locations is extensive, so you can decide where and how to play the game. Participant are able to use any means of transportation available: bus, Didi, metro, rickshaw, food cart – whatever floats your boat (boats are also acceptable).

The race officially ends at 5pm, when all teams are expected to meet at The Happy Monk’s Happy Valley location to receive full points.  There, teams will be greeted with a buffet dinner and drinks provided by the friendly folks at The Monk. Points will be tallied while everyone enjoys a slideshow recap of the day’s events and the top three teams will receive prizes.

Before we get into the nitty-gritty details, let’s take a look at some photos from the last scavenger hunt organized by Bowtie History and The Happy Monk:
