Tue, May 8: Rhodes 

Known for his haunting vocals and ethereal electric guitar, British singer-songwriter David Rhodes has captivated fans since releasing his first single ‘Raise Your Love’ in 2013. For anyone who carries a torch for the bruised melancholy of Jeff Buckley or the soul-searching tenderness of Antony and The Johnsons, expect to find an echo in Rhodes’s upcoming Guangzhou performance.

Tue-Wed, May 8-9: Bocuse d’Or

Bocuse d’Or, often described as ‘the Olympics of cooking’, is a biennial event that draws top chefs from around the world to compete for glory in Lyon, France. For the very first time in the history of the contest, the Bocuse d’Or Asia-Pacific is taking place in China. Guangzhou will be hosting the continental selection round of the prestigious gastronomy contest. Register on bocusedor-asiapacific.com to witness some of the world’s most skilled chefs in action. 

Co-organized by LN Garden Hotel, Guangzhou, the esteemed hotel will also be getting in on the action, hosting a ‘Diner des Grand Chefs’ on May 8 that will host over 100 famous chefs, including those from several Michelin-starred restaurants. The dinner will be held at the LN Garden Hotel, Guangzhou, a day before the final selection of Bocuse d’Or Asia Pacific.

Thu, May 10: Trivia Night at Hooley’s

Join quiz master Matt Bossons for 40-plus mind-bending questions on topics ranging from current events to pop culture, history to geography and everything in between. Basically, if you can identify all seven species of sea turtles, this quiz is for you. If you can’t identify turtles, this quiz is also for you, as there aren’t many turtle questions. The quiz kicks off at 8.30pm and the top three teams will receive boozy prizes courtesy of the good folks at Hooley’s Irish Pub.

Fri, May 11: Moreno Trio

Italian jazz pianist Moreno Donadel, with his accompanying band of Chinese jazz musicians, will stage a performance at Zhile Art Space, where he will also talk to the audience about prominent American jazz pianist Barry Harris. It is a night not to be missed for the city's jazz aficionados.

Fri, May 11: Joshua Radin 

Even if he never intended to become a live performer, when Joshua Radin’s first song ‘Winter’ was featured on an episode of Scrubs, popular acclaim drove him to a record deal and countless world tours. Now, a half million record sales later, Radin has seen his songs featured in more than 150 different films, commercials, and TV shows. He tours China in support of last year’s album, The Fall, which was the first that Radin has produced by himself.

Fri, May 11: Launch Party for Ginstar ZJNT

From 5.30-9pm this Friday evening, enjoy complementary food and drinks at Ginstar in Zhujiang New Town in celebration of the establishment’s official launch. While snacking on burgers, sandwiches and desserts – and sipping on free beer, wine, Prosecco and more – attendees can enjoy live music from three fantastic Guangzhou-based bands.

Fri, May 11: InterNations Guangzhou Royal Celebration

InterNations is hosting another social event where you can meet new friends and celebrate in royal style! Tickets, sold at RMB200, include three welcome drinks (vodka or rum with a coke, sprite or tonic mixer, wine, beer and soft drinks) as well as some delicious appetizers, including a vegetarian selection. Welcome desk closes at 10pm and the dress code is 'Royally British.'

Fri-Sun, May 11-13: Zakynthos Flavors

Sofitel Guangzhou Sunrich and the Consulate General of Greece in Guangzhou are delighted to launch a joint event: Zakynthos Flavors Food Festival. From May 11-13, native Greek dancers and musicians will bring their original Kandathes melodies and Sirtos dance tradition to Guangzhou. Guest chefs Nikolaos Daoutis and Konstantinos Varelis from Zakynthos, Greece will present authentic Mediterranean cuisine at 2 on 988 Café. Signature dishes include a unique olive buffet with 20 selections. It's an event sure to create exotic and unforgettable experiences for local diners.

Sat, May 12: Jean-Yves Thibaudet

Internationally recognized virtuoso pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet is coming to Guangzhou’s Xinghai Concert Hall on May 12. Thibaudet currently splits his time between France and the United States and will be in Guangzhou to perform a commemoration concert for the centenary of the death of celebrated French composer Claude Debussy.

Sat, May 12: Guangzhou Evergrande Host Hebei Fortune FC

Local football giants Guangzhou Evergrande will go head-to-head with their visiting northern foes on May 12 at the team’s home stadium in Tianhe. This will be Guangzhou fans’ only chance to see their ‘boys in red’ live in the city this month in what is sure to be a gripping showdown.

Until May 20: Where Are You Going Tonight

In this exhibition, staged at the newly opened K11 mall, artist Chen Wei creates the artistic equivalent of a film scene. Chen’s creation is inspired by modern literature and conceptual photography in the 20th century, boasting a cinematic feel. By creating an exceptional space that straddles the boundaries between virtuality and reality, the artist allows audiences to become the protagonist of their own scenes.
