That's PRD takes a look at the best live music performances happening this weekend in Guangzhou:
Fri, May 4: A Scent Like Wolves @ SD Livehouse
Pennsylvanian metal group A Scent Like Wolves return to China in support of their recently released EP, Spirit Vessel. It is perhaps telling that their Chinese tour follows hot on the heels of that release, showing how much esteem they have for their fans on this side of the world. Expect gurning vocals and high energy, a la Enter Shikari's outing in the same venue last weekend.
Fri May 4, 8.30pm; RMB80 presale, RMB100 at the door. SD Livehouse. See event listing. Tickets.
Sun, May 6: University of Rock @ SD Livehouse
This is the 11th iteration of the annual University of Rock, which brings together student bands from around Guangzhou for four evenings of hedonistic, rock ‘n’ roll fun throughout May. The event will kickstart this weekend, on May 6, with actively gigging bands like Veto-Way, Explosive Candy and SHOVE-IT taking part.
Sun May 6, 7.30pm; RMB70 presale, RMB80 at the door. SD Livehouse. See event listing. Tickets.
Sun, May 6: Hello Nico @ T:union
Taiwanese band Hello Nico have been making wonderfully crafted emotional tunes since their formation in 2013. Ostensibly a creative group of musicians whose work also includes production, orchestration and multiple side-projects, Hello Nico as a band is a totally unique and cohesive sound which combines the member’s many different musical interests.
Sun May 6, 8.30pm; RMB100 presale, RMB150 at the door. T:union. See event listing. Tickets.
Tue, May 8: Rhodes @ T:union
Having racked up a series of collaborations with musicians like Birdy and Alle Farben, David Rhodes has carved out a niche for himself in the indie market. With unsettlingly powerful vocals, Rhodes' haunting and beautiful sound will certainly reverberate around the high rafters of Yangji's T:union.
Tue May 8, 8.30pm; RMB120 presale, RMB160 at the door. T:union. See event listing. Tickets.
