4 Movies Hitting Chinese Theaters in February 2018

It's a slow month for foreign releases as several blockbuster Chinese films are expected to hit theaters for the upcoming Spring Festival holiday. We've rounded up all the new international releases to check out this month.

Now Playing: The Greatest Showman

This musical biopic tells the story of P.T. Barnum, the founder of Barnum & Bailey Circus, and his rise to fame in New York City in the mid 1800s as he begins working with many of his most famous performers, like the Bearded Lady and Tom Thumb. Critics have praised Hugh Jackman’s charismatic performance as Barnum and the film’s visual effects, while it also recently won a Golden Globe for Best Original Song. Circus fans will know that the film gains an added poignancy from the fact that the real Barnum & Bailey ceased operations after 146 years in 2017.

Now Playing: Happy Death Day

With many critics describing this acclaimed horror flick as “Groundhog Day meets Scream,” Happy Death Day centers on college student Tree Gelbman, who is stuck in a time loop, reliving the day she was murdered over and over. She must try to solve her own murder and save herself before having to begin over again the next day. With a star turn from relative newcomer actress Jessica Rothe as Tree, Happy Death Day has been praised for pairing self-aware jokes and parody with classic slasher film tropes and a whodunit mystery.

This classic 2D animation style film follows the adventures of the "Mane 6" — Twilight Sparkle, Applejack, Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie, Fluttershy and Rarity — as they embark to save Ponyville. Featuring characters voiced by Tabitha St. Germain, Kristin Chenoweth, Cathy Weseluck, Emily Blunt and Michael Peña, My Little Pony: The Movie is sure to be a hit with the little ones.

This 2016 Spanish-Canadian 3D animated film finally secured a China release date for this month. The movie follows a dog named Ozzy, who must escape from dog prison after his owners go on vacation. Reception has been mixed, with some viewers criticizing Ozzy for touching on dark themes that might not be suitable for children. Featuring characters voiced by Guillermo Romero, Dani Rovira and José Mota.
