They say that nothing good comes from staying out past 2am. And while we would normally agree, the recent launch of Guangzhou’s first (and only) 24-hour library has us wondering if there may actually be such a thing as good – and perhaps even educational – late-night adventures.
Located in Huangpu District, near Guangzhou Metro Line 5’s Wenchong Station, the Yuanchuang Coffee Library is open to the public 24 hours a day, seven days a week and covers an area of 1,000-square meters.
The library boasts a collection of 14,000 books, with a focus on literature related to scientific and technological innovation and entrepreneurship, according to Guangzhou Daily. There is also a reading area, coffee shop, conference rooms, children's area and fitness zone, for those who prefer hitting the yoga mat at 3am, as opposed to the books.
Other services include an ‘intelligent’ book loan machine, where patrons can check out and return books without the aid of library staff and fast Wi-Fi.
According to library regulations, readers can borrow up to 15 books at a time and keep them for 31 days. Items checked out from the Yuanchuang Coffee Library can be returned to any service point in Guangzhou's public library service system. Overdue books will see borrowers paying a fee of RMB0.1 per book per day.
So there you have it, Guangzhou’s newest late-night hangout. And while you may have zero interest in visiting a library in the wee hours of the morning, you now have an excuse the next time you stumble through the door at 4am and have to explain to your significant other where you've been all night (although, explaining away the smell of cheap alcohol and cigarettes will likely require some creativity).
