Is Guangzhou becoming China’s most livable city? The latest report from UN-Habitat would suggest yes.

The Guangdong capital was just listed as one of the best places to live in Chinese mainland by the Global Urban Competitiveness Report 2017-2018, released by the UN-Habitat and China’s National Academy of Economic Strategy, according to South China Morning Post.

The report, presented at a World Cities Day forum hosted in Guangzhou on October 30, also ranked Guangzhou 15th among 1,007 cities worldwide on the economic competitiveness index, pointing out the Guangdong capital attracts global talents and enterprises with its housing affordability, which in turn increases the city's population and encourages growth in residential consumption.

With an average per capita GDP of USD20,000, Guangzhou saw its population grow by 542,400 in 2016, according to the report, and ranks first in terms of population growth among China’s first-tier cities.

It's also one of the most affordable places to live in China. A cost of living survey published in the Economist in March this year compared the prices of 160 goods and services in 133 cities around the globe and ranked Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing and Shenzhen as second, 16th, 21st and 47th respectively. Guangzhou, meanwhile, came in 69th.

Wen Guohui, mayor of Guangzhou, has said the city carefully implements a 'planning first' policy to be clean, safe and orderly.

This December, Guangzhou will play host to world leaders and heads of global business at the 2017 Fortune Global Forum
