Another Tropical Storm Threatens to Hit China

While typhoon Khanun was breezing by South China yesterday, bringing intermittent downpours, another storm was already brewing.

Lan, the 21st storm of the season, formed in the small hours of this morning in the Pacific Ocean. At 8am this morning it was 1,700 kilometers southeast of Manila, with maximum wind speeds of 18 meters per second.

The storm, moving at a speed of 10-15 kilometers per hour, is predicted to move northwest, then north. It's expected to strengthen, possibly becoming a typhoon or even a super typhoon.

But before you start stocking up on canned goods, keep an eye on the forecast. As a model by Weather Underground shows, the storm may veer away from land, missing both the Philippines and China.

And at the very least, China's National Meteorological Center reports, the storm won't be affecting Chinese waters for the next five days.

Meanwhile, Khanun is continuing its mostly harmless run through South China. While a blue typhoon warning is still active for China, Khanun has been downgraded to a tropical storm again and will continue to weaken as it moves past Hainan's northwest coast.
