“Meet me at ‘Fish Bead’ and then we can head over to ‘Guangzhou Fire Car Station’” is a confusing, albeit technically correct way to say “Meet me at Yuzhu and then we can head over to Guangzhou Railway Station.”
Confused? Both ‘Fish Bead’ and ‘Guangzhou Fire Car Station’ are the literal English translations of Metro Line 5’s Yuzhu Station and Guangzhou Huochezhan Station (better known as Guangzhou Railway Station).
Translating Line 5’s Chinese names to literal English proved to be a comical undertaking, with the English-speaking staff in the That’s editorial office discovering the ‘true’ meaning of the names of the subway stops we ride daily (as the lovely That’s PRD office happens to be located on Line 5).
