On August 30, Guangzhou Customs announced the details of several narcotics smuggling busts, one of which was the largest case of drugs being hidden inside the body that the city’s authorities had seen in 10 years, according to Chinanews.com.
The smuggler, a native of an unnamed African nation, was disguised as a businessman and can be seen on closed-circuit television camera footage moving slowly through Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, looking visibly uncomfortable.
His behavior raised suspicion with customs officers, and he was eventually stopped and interrogated.
During questioning, he admitted to officers that he had swallowed 100 drug-filled pills before flying from Dubai to Guangzhou.

He claimed that he was offered USD5,000 by an international drug trafficking ring to smuggle the illicit drugs, and that the group even provided his business attire.
A total of 1.97 kilograms of narcotics were retrieved from the man’s body. It is unclear from the report exactly what substance the pills contained.
“The suspect is a holder of a university diploma, which is different from the previous drug-trafficking suspects we’ve dealt with,” a customs official told CCTV. “He is also an HIV carrier, which added risk to our work.”
This year, Guangzhou Customs has seen a total of 47 drug smuggling cases, with 38 suspects arrested and 245.3 kilograms of illegal drugs seized as of August 29.
