The Guangzhou Metro announced yesterday that it has opened a bidding process to subcontract security upgrades to a security service firm. The contract with the company currently providing security services ends on September 24, and the Guangzhou Metro is hoping for a seamless transition – with another company taking over security on September 25.
Newly announced measures will see the purchase of 855 pieces of new security equipment, including X-ray machines, and will cost nearly RMB3 billion, according to Guangzhou Daily. Twelve thousand security inspectors will be hired to run the new gear.
It’s unclear exactly when the new tech and personnel will go into service, as one day (September 24 to 25) seems like a really quick dispatch for such a massive security overhaul.
The addition of X-ray machines will see Guangzhou Metro’s security reach the level of other major Chinese cities, including Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen.
A metro security check in Beijing
Much the same as at airport security, both commuters and their baggage will be required to undergo an X-ray scan.
The new tech and additional manpower is intended to prevent firearms, ammunition and explosives, as well as flammable, radioactive, toxic and corrosive goods, from finding their way onto the metro transit system.
According to the tender released yesterday, the new contract will run from September 25, 2017, until September 24, 2020.
While we appreciate the added security, we must admit we aren’t looking forward to the inevitable long(er) metro lines.
