Free Cash Being Given Away at this Guangzhou Metro Station

“If you need money, you can take from here. Up to RMB5 per person,” read a message scrawled on a small whiteboard outside Guangzhou’s Yantang Metro Station yesterday. Next to the whiteboard: a plastic container filled with RMB1 coins.

According to a report carried by Tencent News, a total of 600 coins were inside the box as of yesterday morning. And, despite being out all day, by last night less than RMB300 had been taken from the box.

Most of those who took change from the box used the coins to pay for their bus or metro fare, or bought a drink (essential in the current heatwave). Perhaps surprisingly, some people actually put money into the box.

"This reflects the high quality of people in Guangzhou, especially the children,” said one passerby quoted in the report. “It reflects positive social energy."

That’s was unable to uncover information about who put the cash box outside the station.

As of this morning, the box was still located at Exit B of Yantang Station, the interchange of Line 3 and Line 6.
