The Guangzhou International Dragon Boat Tournament saw 130 teams and about 5,000 athletes race along the Pearl River this past Sunday under a scorching June sun.
At 8am, a crowd started gathering at the north gate of Sun Yat-sen University, where booths sold coconut water, air conditioners and... baijiu? By 9.30am when the race started, the riverside was thronged with spectators.
This year, teams hailing from Canada, the US, Singapore, Malaysia, Iran, Hong Kong, Macau, as well as cities across Guangdong competed in the Men’s Open, Men’s International, Women’s Open and University Student categories.
The men’s team from Lanhe Town of Nansha District claimed the champion in the Men’s Open, while the Guangdong Yuanhang Jiujiang Women’s Team came in first place in the Women’s Open. First-place awards in the Men’s International and University Student categories went respectively to Hong Kong’s Chenghuang Communication team and the Shunde Polytechnic Academy team.
