Police in Guangzhou’s Haizhu District received a call this morning shortly before 7.30am reporting that a man armed with a knife had severed the hand of a 7-year-old boy, according to Tencent News.
Police and medical personnel immediately rushed to the scene and the boy was transported to the hospital to receive emergency treatment.
Police dogs were brought in to try and locate the boy’s hand, which was finally retrieved and sent to the hospital at around 1.30pm.
At the hospital, the boy's mother told reporters the attacker sprayed her eyes with an unknown "chemical" that caused "extreme pain." Pictures supplied by an eyewitness show a man wearing red pulling the boy backwards by his backpack, causing him to fall over.
Next he frenziedly sawed at the youth’s hand with his knife. When the appendage was severed, the perpetrator fled into an alley with it and disappeared.
According to a neighbor, the disturbing attack was over in less than 10 seconds.
“I was behind my shop at the time and came out to see a child on the ground with his mother shouting,” a nearby shopkeeper told reporters. “I didn’t know what had happened.”
An update shortly after 3pm today on the Guangzhou Public Security Bureau’s Weibo account announced that the main suspect, a 41-year-old man from Hubei province, had been caught in Huangpu District at around 1pm. Afterwards another male suspect (38), also from Hubei, was picked up in Haizhu District. Initial investigations show there may have been a dispute over debts between the suspects and the boy’s family.
