Last Friday, April 28, Jordy van Egmond, known more commonly by his stage name Dyro, cruised into Guangzhou to serve up a dose of electronic dance music mayhem.

By all accounts the show was a memorable one, hell, the DJ himself even tossed Guangzhou some props on his official Twitter account.

We were able to chat with Dyro post-performance to get the celebrated deck-master’s thoughts on an eclectic range of topics – from EDM to bears, beets and Battlestar Galactica. Here is what the Dutch disc jockey had to say:

For starters, welcome to Guangzhou. Tell us, is this your first time visiting the city?
Thanks! No, it is not, I played here back in 2016 for STORM Festival. China, and Asia as a whole, is somewhere I’m always excited to return to.

Before we dive into the finer points of your musical career, tell our readers that aren’t familiar with you a bit about your sound.
I make hard-hitting electronic music that is influenced by dubstep, drum and bass and electro.

In 2010, you got involved with Revealed Recordings, tell us a bit about how this cooperation has evolved over the past seven years?
I released my first single on Revealed back in 2011. I was just a kid really, still a teenager so I’ve obviously evolved a lot since then both as an artist and as a person. I started my own label WOLV in 2014 and I also just recently took a year away from releasing any new music – I wanted to concentrate on what sounds I wanted to make and what audiences I wanted to reach. There are still influences from earlier on in my career, of course there are, but I have a lot more control and creative freedom with what I do now.

If you had to pick one, just one, of your songs to introduce to a new listener, which would it be?
I’ll say ‘Alive’ right now, that track was the first I released in a long time and showcases my harder, slightly darker sound – I wanted to let everyone know that I was back and taking no prisoners!

EDM has seen an explosive growth globally in the past half decade, tell us a bit about where you think the genre and scene is heading?
I think we’ll see artists expressing themselves more in a way that isn’t just with this ‘generic EDM sound.’ Events like Hard Summer show this, catering to a different market that can be slightly more underground, and stages like bassPOD at EDC are giving alternative artists that space and delivering what the fans want.

As a 25-year-old musician you have experienced considerable success; how does it feel to have made DJ Mag’s list of top 100 DJs for the past four years?
I do feel very lucky to be where I am, I do realize that I’m blessed but we all define success differently. For me, it was amazing being recognized by DJ Mag at such a young age, but now I don’t feel like I need validation like that, I’m happy with what I’m doing and if people want to support, that’s dope!

What next?
I’m sitting on so much new music right now and I have a huge summer of shows and festivals waiting for me – after taking a year out, it’s going to feel great to get back out there! This Asia tour has been exciting too, I always enjoy playing here.

Now for some fun questions: which is the better show – Seinfeld or Curb Your Enthusiasm?
Seinfeld!

Bears, beets or Battlestar Galactica – choose one?
Beets, not beats? I’d say bears because they’re badass but I wouldn’t want to be left alone with one, that’s for sure.

If you had to eat one food for the rest of your life, which dish would you choose?
Steak. Ha, or is that too fancy? I’m sticking with steak…

If you had to pick, would you rather be interviewed by Joe Rogan or Howard Stern?
Joe Rogan, he is too funny!
