If you’re a runner, rollerblader, hoverboard enthusiast or just enjoy taking leisurely strolls in the evening, you likely exhausted Guangzhou’s meager collection of pedestrian-friendly lanes within a week of settling down here.
But don’t pack up and fly home just yet: by 2018, Guangzhou will have a proper jogging track of its own overlooking one of the most picturesque locales in the city.
Slated to occupy the space along Linjiang Dadao near Ersha Island – between the Guangzhou and Pazhou bridges – the 6-kilometer track will connect to and extend an existing greenway.
From the track, joggers will be able to enjoy a panoramic view of Guangzhou’s CBD, including the Canton Tower, Zhujiang InBev International Beer Musuem, the Pazhou Convention and Exhibition Center and Liede Bridge.
The surrounding landscape – a plot spanning roughly 290,000 square meters – will be further beautified, according to the City Forestry and Gardens Bureau, as part of the greenway track project that’s already secured RMB40 million in investments.
According to Tencent News, in preparation for the track’s opening, a parking lot will likely need be constructed near the premises, while new signs demarcating a jogging-only lane will need to be established to protect runners from crashing into swarms of cyclists on shared bikes (as apparently happens now on the greenway).
Jogging as a form of exercise still isn’t nearly as popular in China as it is abroad, but many Chinese have picked up the hobby in recent years following a government-backed fitness initiative.
And though record numbers of Chinese are signing up to run marathons, many are woefully unprepared, as evidenced by the thousands who sustained injuries and illnesses at the Qingyuan Marathon in March 2016.
Here's to hoping this track will inspire more people to get outdoors and get in shape!
