A 49-year-old man in Guangzhou’s Baiyun District learned the hard way that shoving an eel up your anus will not solve constipation, instead it results in surgery at your local hospital.
That’s right, you read that correctly, a gentlemen referred to in media reports as Mr. Liu recently walked into Dongren Hospital complaining of abdominal pain, when surgeons opened him up – surprise! – a half-meter-long eel was in his stomach.
The animal, which has been identified as an Asian swamp eel, was dead upon its discovery and reportedly found amongst “feces and food residue.”
According to local media reports, Mr. Liu had earlier visited the hospital complaining of constipation and doctors had diagnosed him with an obstructed bowel. It was recommended that he be admitted to the hospital for observation – something Mr. Liu flatly rejected.

Apparently convinced he could take matters into his own hands, or anus – you decide, Mr. Liu resorted to an 'ancient folk remedy' that, you guessed it, calls for shoving an eel up your pigu.
As we’ve already established, things went slightly awry and he ended up back in the hospital to have the 250-gram fish removed from his insides.
A surgeon at the hospital, Dr. Zhao Zhirong, told media that the man didn’t mention the eel on his second visit to the hospital. According to Dr. Zhao: “We asked Mr. Liu when we spotted the eel in his stomach, he said the eel went into his anus by mistake. But after the surgery, he told us that he actually put an eel inside his anus himself.”
The surgeon also stated that Liu’s situation would have become much worse if he had waited to return to the hospital. He is currently recovering at the facility.
