At around 3pm on April 10, a man’s plan to rob a Meihuayuan branch of the Agricultural Bank of China was foiled, according to Tencent News.
The thief was apparently detected by bank security upon entering and was noted as having “a sly look.” Once up at the teller window, the man refused to sit down and instead handed the cashier, named Zhong Shuting, a note that read: “Robbery. Hand over 2000 yuan right away.”
Zhong did not panic at this gentle threat and gave the note to her assistant, who informed the bank’s manager and then called the police. The teller then went on to chat with the would-be robber, asking him for his personal ID card and distracting him just enough for bank security personnel to tackle him to the ground.
The whole incident lasted roughly 12 minutes and concluded with the man being led away by police.
Now you are probably wondering, why the heck would the man rob a bank for only RMB2,000? It’s a puzzling question and, as it turns out, the man revealed the answer while conversing with Zhong. Apparently, the man’s plan was not foiled by his arrest and instead completed when police led him out of the bank.
“He has been roaming the streets for a while and had only three meals this week. He saw on TV that, in such a case [robbing a bank], he can be sent to jail and be fed there,” said Zhong, who the police said will be rewarded for her help in subduing the robber.
