February 21: Taco Tuesday at Tristan’s Calmex Restaurant and Bar

February 21: Idea Exchange

Are you lacking confidence or purpose, finding it difficult to achieve your goals or even to find something you feel passionate about? In that case, this week’s Idea Exchange may just be the tonic you need! The two inspirational speakers this week, Fabi and Rochelle, are both from Canada, where they studied social work and youth counselling. They believe that by finding your passion you can find your purpose. 

The duo started the ‘Friends with Passion’ project in Guangzhou to help others through sharing and self-reflection. They will talk about this project before running a passion workshop.

February 21-16: Ghost the Musical

Ghost the Musical presents a stage adaptation of the 1990 Oscar-nominated film Ghost. Adapted by the film’s script writer Bruce Joel Rubin, Ghost debuted in Manchester in 2011 and went on to light up Broadway a year later. It has been performed a total of 2,500 times worldwide and translated into five languages. If you haven’t seen the film, definitely come check out the musical, and if you are familiar with the story, this particular rendition (performed in English by an international cast) is not to be missed.

February 22 & 26: Capoeira Brasil

An organization with representatives all over the world, Capoeira Brasil practices, teaches and demonstrates the Afro-Brazilian martial art of Capoeira. Under the auspices of the Hong Kong branch, Mekael Turner runs classes every Wednesday and Sunday at Guangzhou’s new TMT Gym beside the river in Liede. Turner, who also goes by his capoeira nickname ‘Jamaica,’ describes the sport as “like a conversation,” not just between the two bodies facing off against one another, but in the interaction of the different elements that make up the martial art, including playing an instrument called the berimbau and chanting in Portuguese.

February 23: Hooley’s Trivia Night

February 23 & 25: Caravane Live

The members of the Quebec rock band Caravane are on the rise! Their debut album Chien Noir earned them an ADISQ nomination in the 'Rock Album of the Year' category and the Sirius XM Indie Music Awards for 'Emerging Artist of the Year.' Their second album, Fuego, was released to great critical acclaim in fall of 2016. The four guys behind Caravane deliver folk-tinted franco blues-rock, which has been compared to bands like The White Stripes, The Black Keys and The Gaslight Anthem. Caravane will make their China debut this week, performing onstage at The Brew Panyu and Hooley’s on Xingsheng Lu. Get ready to rock!

February 24: British Craft Beer and Cider at Bravo

February 25: GWIC 2017 Charity Gala

Supported by the British School of Guangzhou, GWIC (Guangzhou Women’s International Club) is hosting a charity event on February 25 with proceeds to be donated to Hopeful Hearts, a charity which raises funds for children with life-threatening heart conditions. The occasion will feature a seven-course dinner, free flow of wines, silent auction and entertainment. Come to the event in a qipao or other Chinese attire and with a loving heart.
