Twenty-seven construction workers are currently camped out at the Yijian Building on Jianshe Liu Malu demanding long overdue payment from their employer, the Guangzhou Municipal Construction Company.
The workers all traveled from Jiangxi province to ask their employer for over RMB2 million in unpaid wages, according to one of the workers, Lai Genyin.
Lai has been working on the company’s Qingyuan residential project, called California Garden (加州花园), for over three years and said he and his co-workers haven’t been paid a dime since the project broke ground.
“We do concrete work over there. Overall, Guangzhou Municipal Construction Company has delayed a payment of over RMB2 million,” said Lai, who is expecting to receive RMB130,000 that the company owes him.
Last night the workers slept in the lobby of the Yijian Building, which is located a short walk from the Taojin Metro Station in Yuexiu District.
According to Lai, the company told the disgruntled workers they would get paid on January 10.
That’s would like to note that none of the workers’ allegations have been proven and that the Guangzhou Municipal Construction Company hung up twice when we called for comment.
