January 9: Sonido Suave at 1920
The unplugged quartet Sonido Suave consists of an Ecuadorian vocalist, Dutch guitarist, Brazilian bassist and Chinese drummer. With different cultural backgrounds, these brilliant musicians create a unique fusion to jazz you up every Monday while dining at 1920.

January 10: Idea Exchange
This Tuesday at the Idea Exchange, classic Chinese opera Kunqu is at the center of discussion. Often deemed as boring and out of date, Kunqu is in need of an injection of modern characters in to its blood. Two experts of theater art, Jonathan Ellman, who teaches Theater and English at Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, and Peking opera artist Jiang Xinfa are going to discuss their ideas for a revival of this 600-year-old opera, after which an opera troupe will perform for the attendees.

January 12: Alice Sara Ott
German-Japanese pianist Alice Sara Ott believes "music was the language that goes much beyond any words." Born in 1988, Ott played to a full house in Hercules Hall in Munich at just 5-years-old. Her recent performance with the London Symphony Orchestra led the Guardian to say she “gave the kind of gawp-inducing bravura performance of which legends are made.” Ott will play works by Edvard Grieg and Franz Liszt at the Guangzhou Opera House.

January 13: Buena Vista Social Club
The 1998 Grammy Award-winning album Buena Vista Social Club, named after a club in Havana, is a recording of Latin American music made by Cuban musician Juan de Marcos González and American guitarist Ry Cooder. The album soon became an international success and was made into a documentary, which ended up winning an Academy Award nomination in 1999. This month, a group of Cuban musicians will present songs from the award-winning album as well as a taste of their musical prowess to audiences in the PRD.

January 13: Stout Tasting at Bravo

January 13: DJ Amadeus at W Guangzhou
Born into a family of music talent, Dennis Ivanoff, better known as DJ Amadeus, was exposed to the world of music at an early age. Amadeus has rocked stages with Tiesto, Swedish House Mafia, David Guetta, Bob Sinclar, Martin Solveig and other prominent musicians, rendering him a highly sought-after DJ. The New York-based and world’s Top 25 DJ will return to Guangzhou this January. Don't miss it!

January 14: 2017 TEDxZhujiang New Town
If you haven’t managed to attend one of the previous TEDx events to grace our fair city, then don’t miss this edition of TEDxZhujiangNewTown – a fantastic opportunity to learn, have fun and meet some pretty eclectic individuals. January 14-15: Mora Godoy
Even Barack Obama couldn’t resist the onstage fervor of Mora Godoy’s tango performance when the American president visited Argentina last March. People say football and tango are two of Argentineans’ dearest possessions and that if you don’t know tango, you don’t know Argentina. So for those of you who are drawn to or interested in tango, you’re in luck, because Mora Godoy herself is visiting Guangzhou this January. Argentina’s most prominent tango artist, Godoy was a ballerina for 15 years before she started learning jazz dance, which constitutes the distinctive style of her performances. Come see “tango’s spokeswomen” at the Guangzhou Opera House.

January 14-15: Carmen by Ballet Flamenco de Madrid
The Ballet Flamenco de Madrid, a non-profit cultural association founded in 2001, tells the saddening love story of Carmen in rhythmic, passionate flamenco. After treating audiences to more than 2,500 performances worldwide, the Ballet Flamenco de Madrid is coming on stage this month in Guangzhou to present Carmen.

January 15: Yo-Yo Ma and Michael Stern
In concert with his Harvard schoolmate and noteworthy American conductor Michael Stern, Chinese American cellist Yo-Yo Ma will bring you a musical feast at Xinghai Concert Hall. A child prodigy, Ma started performing at the age of four before later graduating from Julliard School and Harvard University. He was a regular attendee of the Grammys, receiving a total of 17 awards. Accompanied by a makeshift orchestra consisting of some 80 young, Chinese and oversea Chinese musicians, Yo-Yo Ma and Michael Stern’s concert will be the highlight of the music exchange program Youth Music Culture Guangdong.
