The Happy Monk Kingold is Now Open for Business

Calling all monks! From the monks at the Shaolin Monastery to the monks in sunny southern Thailand and even that missing Canadian man, Brian Jones, who is rumored to be living a monastic life in a cave somewhere north of Beijing – The Happy Monk Kingold is now open.

The opening comes hot on the heels of the removal of the Xingsheng Lu location’s patio (along with the rest of the street) and the Kingold location has responded by opening an even nicer patio – complete with traditional patio tables and picnic bench-style seating.

While the patio is currently without cover, large double umbrellas will be arriving before Chinese New Year, according to proprietor Jeremy Sargent.

In addition to a banging patio, the new restaurant’s location is also optimum. Located in the heart of Zhujiang New Town, The Happy Monk Kingold is positioned on a strip of other newly opened locations – including Guangzhou’s second official Paulaner Brauhaus (there are a lot of fakes kicking around this city, but that’s a story for another day). Getting to this new dining area is a short walk from Zhujiang New Town metro exit A1.

When feasting at this new eatery, guests can expect more of the same delicious food already served at the Monk’s other three locations, although, That’s was told, some culinary surprises may be appearing in the not-so-distant future.

“It’s still part of the same family, its still got the same DNA. We aren’t trying to start a new concept,” said Sargent. “We are trying to build on the concept we already have.”

And build they have. With a stunning interior – featuring a wrap-around bar unlike anything in the city – and ample toilets (for the critics of the Jianshe Wu Malu Monk’s currently cramped W/C), we are confident this restaurant will become a sterling edition to the growing Monk brand.

Oh, we almost forgot to mention, this location also claims four retro British chesterfields from the 1950s and several impressive chandeliers, ranging in age from 50 to almost 100 years old.

While The Happy Monk Kingold is still in a ‘soft opening’ phase, we can attest that the beer is cold, the service is prompt and the hungry and thirsty people of Guangzhou are there.
