Weekly Live Music Review is a regular online feature where Guangzhou-based musician Kirby Carney reviews a live performance in the PRD.
Let me set the scene for you wonderful people: Lucky Jack looks like what China thinks an underground jazz bar looks like. A stage in the middle of the venue has been pushed back against the wall; the suave seats and ridiculous amount of Jack Daniels lined up as decoration fulfill everything you’ve come to expect from southern China and its charming imagination.
The band tonight is a Russian four-piece. There’s Iggy on guitar, who is making me absurdly jealous with his ability to riff between scorching hot guitar solos and advanced choppy rhythm guitar; Den who sings, plays bass and charms all the ladies in the house with his million-dollar looks; and Alex on drums, who plays with a tight professionalism that keeps the whole unit together. The band is also accompanied by the lovely Tanya, who plays so passionately on the saxophone it looks as if she’s seducing the entire male audience.
They're playing a wide variety of hits ranging from funk rockers Red Hot Chili Peppers to hard rock legends Led Zeppelin to modern pop culture icons like Enrique Iglesias.
The band covers everything and quite professionally as well. My own personal favorite was ‘House of The Rising Sun,’ which was turned into a hard rock pop melody piece of controlled madness. It was a frenzy contained within the palm of your hand and the passion from Iggy's guitar was pouring through like nobody's business.
The band closed their set with Stray Cat Blues' ‘Rock This Town,’ which was fitting because they had blown the roof off the place by the time they finished Lucky Jack.
The Mojo Heads are scheduled to play every Thursday and Sunday night at Lucky Jack on Party Pier. See listing for Lucky Jack.
