Oldie but Goodie is a monthly column where we feature noteworthy restaurants, cafes or bars that have been open at least six months and are worth a try.
Take the underpass from TaiKoo Hui at Shipai Qiao station and you’ll come to (yet another) upscale mall with Zara Home, Mango, Costa Coffee and, the highlight of our column this month, Dim Cube. You’ll spot the concrete siding of this industrial brunch spot first, if the 20 tables that spill out into the mall’s busy corridor don’t give it away.
Brunch here is, as we recently discovered, out of this world. Come after 10am and before 10pm for all-day breakfast favorites like the savory salmon eggs benedict (RMB78), topped with tender baby spinach and smoked salmon. Service is surprisingly swift and professional, and everything on the menu – from the fruit tea (RMB22) filled with fresh mango, kiwi, passion fruit and strawberries, to the grilled salmon fillet spinach salad (RMB58) mixed with roasted pumpkin and cashews – is refreshing and on point.
Though the name sounds more like a clothing boutique than a cafe, we learned ‘dim’ refers to ‘dim sum’ (a tribute to the morning meal of Canton) while ‘cube’ is intended to reflect the orderly wisdom (think Rubik’s Cube) that springs from the talented chefs and team behind the establishment. A kind of Western cha chaan teng, Dim Cube specializes in grab-and-go baked goods and brunch, with a range of wholesome sandwiches, bagels and gourmet cakes (the avocado cake had us at hello, RMB35).
New seasonal menus are in the works, and a second location is set to open by Christmas in GTLand Mall of Zhujiang New Town. Stop in for a morning coffee, quick lunch or afternoon pick-me-up.
