This year’s Melbourne Cup Luncheon sadly didn’t make it to the starting line, being canceled yesterday in an official WeChat post by AustCham. The event was supposed to be held on November 1 on the 65th floor of the Park Hyatt Guangzhou.
According to the post, the reversal is due to issues securing a reliable satellite or cable connection for the race and concerns over gambling.
While this unexpected cancelation is undoubtedly a bummer, stay tuned for more fun events from AustCham before the end of the year!

“It is with great regret that we need to advise that the Melbourne Cup Luncheon planned for Tuesday November 1st will be cancelled. We have received many RSVP’s and a great deal of interest for the lunch again this year, however unfortunately we cannot secure a reliable satellite or cable connection for the race. In addition, we have also been advised that any events associated with gambling or betting may be scrutinized by the PSB this year, so we also don’t wish to take further risk of putting attendees at risk.
"We are truly sorry for this, especially given that there was so much excitement building up to the event. Meantime, we will finalizing plans for our November & December events including our next Business Referral Dinner, Interchamber Networking & Year-End Christmas Party.”
