Consulates Ask Citizens to Brace for Super Typhoon Meranti

As many did prior to Typhoon Nida – the notoriously anticlimactic ‘super’ typhoon that delicately touched down in the PRD in early August – some consulates and governments have issued warning emails to foreign nationals in China, advising them to prepare for “rapidly deteriorating” weather conditions expected to hit Guangdong over the holiday.

Though the storm will quickly head north towards Shanghai on September 15 shortly after hitting the mainland, the United States Consulate in Guangzhou issued the following warning to its citizens in South China this afternoon, asking them to check local news media for updates:

The U.S. Consulate General advises all U.S. citizens that local authorities are forecasting that Super Typhoon Meranti will impact South China, particularly southeastern Fujian and eastern Guangdong provinces, the morning of Thursday (September 15) through late Friday evening (September 16). Weather conditions are expected to deteriorate rapidly and may include maximum sustained winds of at least 150 mph, heavy rains, and flooding in low-lying areas. All U.S. citizens are encouraged to monitor local news media and the China Meteorological Administration website.

The Singapore government also sent a warning email to citizens on Wednesday afternoon, claiming Meranti will bring maximum winds of 80 knots (or 148 kilometers per hour) on September 15.

Guangdong, which will not bear the brunt of the storm, may experience heavy rains and transportation delays, so travelers should ‘prepare’ accordingly – as in, bring an umbrella.

For those of you at home, it would be wise to stock up on a few new releases from your local DVD seller and maybe a bottle of wine to wash down all those cloying mooncakes. Do not – we repeat – do not empty grocery stores and prepare for the apocalypse, as so many of you did last time.

Rain or shine, we wish you all a very merry Mid-Autumn Festival holiday!
