Perhaps it’s in desperation, or in lieu of an inherited fortune, but Chinese men seem to have a knack for finding creative – and usually absurd – schemes (read: dressed as a giant sperm, in a Shenzhen typhoon or with 4,500 diapers) to profess their affection for women.
Last Sunday, a third-year college student in Guangzhou arranged 999 pomelos in the shape of a heart for his nvsheng or ‘goddess’ on the floor of a shopping center in the Guangzhou Higher Education Mega Center. Concerned the colossal display of affection wasn’t intimate enough, he also tied handwritten love notes on each fruit, one of which read: “my love is in the pomelo.” Some have speculated he’s a science major.
In a scene reminiscent of Heath Ledger’s tear-jerking declaration of love in 10 Things I Hate About You, the young man then sang of his affection for the woman, one year his senior, over a loudspeaker. Pomelos happen to be her favorite fruit.
Unfortunately – or fortunately for media outlets looking for a clever title – the man’s pomelo proposal failed to ‘bear fruit.’
Witnesses say the woman bitterly rejected his request that she be his girlfriend, claiming she had no feelings for him and had always considered him just a friend.
She then proceeded to give away the fruit – which of course symbolized her suitor’s love for her – to onlookers who had been snapping photos and taking video the whole time.
Within two minutes, bystanders had heartlessly snatched up all 999 pomelos. One woman stuffed several of the oversized globes into her baby carriage, while another man was seen leaving with five, according to the South China Morning Post.
Popular around the Mid-Autumn Festival and often included in gift baskets, pomelos are thought to symbolize prosperity, fertility, good health and family unity.
