CA1
Simplicity resides at the heart of CA1’s approach, but that is exactly why we appreciate this location so much. With a simple menu, featuring mains such as a vegetable ham wrap (RMB35) and salami on white bread (RMB40), CA1 really sets itself apart with it’s healthy smoothies and milkshakes. We highly recommend the specialty orange black tea milkshake (RMB35-40), which can be served cold or warm (try the latter!).
Price: RMB60
Who’s going: health gurus, doctors, sun-kissed progressives
Good for: kale smoothies, all-organic California produce

Feel More Coffee & Bagels
More of a café than a restaurant, Feel More offers patrons chewy, fresh bagels, bagel sandwiches, coffee and – wait for it – A&W root beer floats! For first timers, we recommend diving into the range of bagel sandwiches, including the BLT (RMB27), smoked salmon (RMB37), tuna melt (RMB27) and beef pastrami (RMB37) – all of which can be tweaked according to preference.
Price: RMB50
Who’s going: New Yorkers, brunch crowds
Good for: bagels with cream cheese, BLTs, Kettle chips

Alouboutin
Alouboutin is strictly French. There’s no obligatory fried rice or shawarmas tacked on the menu to comfort unadventurous passersby. Food selections here aim to impress and our favorites include the creamy cucumber and mint salad with salmon and prawns (RMB88), confit of duck leg and grilled duck breast with mashed potatoes and nut salad (RMB168) and the dreamy chocolate mousse with homemade raspberry sorbet (RMB48). If you are not interested in stuffing your gullet, then try afternoon tea for two (RMB88), which includes two cups of tea or coffee and a tower of sweets.
Price: RMB58 for breakfast, RMB200 for dinner
Who’s going: French couples in Guangzhou, food critics
Good for: fine dining, homemade ice cream and pastries

Lucky Jack
This bar-cum-restaurant features over a dozen beers on tap from around the world, from Stella Artois and Singha to Liefmans Fruitesse and Hamovniki, and boasts an impressive edibles menu from 6pm onwards. Try the bangers and mash (RMB88), grilled salmon (RMB138) or the filet mignon (RMB168), all offering great value for money. Other notable food options include lobster and cod, tomahawk steaks, pizzas and burgers!
Price: RMB180
Who’s going: a young Clint Eastwood, the American South
Good for: imported spirits, quality eats, drunken jigs

Mafia
Originally opened under the name Capone Sandwich Mafia, Mafia is undoubtedly our favorite Liede sandwich hangout. With Xingsheng Lu’s largest craft beer selection and some awesome weekly specials (buy one burger or sandwich on Sundays and get the second 50 percent off), it is no wonder this new location has garnered such a loyal following. First timers to this location should dive into the Al Capone sandwich (RMB70), which piles Argentinean topside beef, a fried egg, blue cheese sauce and your standard sandwich veggies on a slice of white deli bread.
Price: RMB90-100 (including a beer)
Who’s going: mobsters, teachers tired of Subway
Good for: tasty sandwiches and 80s rock ‘n’ roll

Over Easy
Over Easy is the city’s latest all-day fusion brunch bistro, brought to you by Senses, the culinary artistes behind 63 Burger & Booze and 63 Steak & Burger. Our recommendations here include the baked eggs (RMB68), which come in a delicious hot ramekin of sausages, vegetables, cheese and almonds, and the benedict crumpets (RMB48), which feature ham, pastrami, runny eggs and hollandaise sauce. If the occasion fits, pair the Southern Cross Silver sparkling series (RMB268/bottle) with fresh orange juice (RMB38/48) for fizzy mimosas.
Price: RMB100
Who’s going: late risers, eggs-pert diners (and drinkers)
Good for: eggs, meat and bread, boozy brunches

Paradise India
Paradise India boasts no indoor seating and no fancy decorations – instead choosing to make its name on good food and fair, honest prices. Top curry choices include the mutton roganjosh (RMB65), chicken masala (RMB55) and our personal favorite, the saag paneer (RMB50). Your best bread option, by our assessment, is the cheese paratha (RMB25), although we also enjoyed the onion kulcha (RMB15).
Price: RMB100
Who's going: Chino and other curry-deprived Liede characters
Good for: tasty curries and Kingfisher beer
