New restaurant: 63 Steak & Burger

The claim, currently brewing up a storm among expat pattie enthusiasts, is that 63 Steak and Burger is the best burger joint in town. Such a claim needs to be tested.

63 Steak and Burger (Down by the River) has totally revamped its former menu and name (it used to be 63 Antipasto) and is now a place geared towards providing customers with high-end Western fare – their chef is a former Grand Hyatt employee.

Many foreigners apparently frequent the place, and if the posts on the ubiquitous WeChat are anything to go by, it appears to be true.

An obvious choice to sample would be the Classic Cheese Burger (RMB88) done medium well (well done is an option also) and served with a garden salad and fries. The beef pattie was adorned with bacon, cheese, lettuce, onions and sandwiched by a sesame bun. You really do get a lot of bang for your buck – the stacked garnishes created (literally) the tallest burger I’ve ever seen. Yet the meat to bun ratio was perfect, with the bread holding up well against the cheesy pattie.

Our medium rare center-cut tenderloin (200 grams, RMB228) with Dijon mustard was a fist-sized, chunky cut of juicy tenderness. I asked for medium rare and that’s exactly how it was served, drizzled in black pepper sauce.

I'd recommend ordering any of the steaks with a few of the sides on offer, either sauteed mushrooms (RMB28), grilled white asparagus (RMB38), or the glazed baby carrots (RMB28), as I felt somewhat of a butcher tucking into a lonesome slab of beef.

Verdict: it’s a hell of a claim to begin with and I’d put the place down as a strong contender but not quite yet a champion.
