From September 16 through 26, Guangzhou will host the ever-popular Oktoberfest bash. This year the event has been moved to a larger and more convenient location - Tianhe Sports Center.
Now in its 11th year, Oktoberfest will be celebrated under a big white and blue tent, covering 1,800 square meters (providing substantially more room than past years). The tent can accommodate more than 800 guests. (Skip to the bottom of this article for the fast facts.)
Attendees will partake in traditional Oktoberfest activities, featuring Bavarian folk customs, folk music and traditional costumes. In typical Oktoberfest fashion free-flow German beer and an authentic German buffet will be the true highlights of the festival.
In October 2004, Guangdong Province signed a friendly relations agreement with Bavaria, Germany. That pact laid the foundation for the establishment of Guangzhou Oktoberfest.
The Marriott's China Hotel, along with their partners - the German Chamber of Commerce in South and Southwest China, the German Consulate General in Guangzhou, the Lingnan Group and the Guangdong Tourism Association, are excited to launch the exciting celebration of German culture.
If you are unaware, the origins of Oktoberfest date back to 1810, to the wedding celebration of Bavarian Prince Ludwig and his bride Therese. The celebrations were held in a large meadow in Munich and went on for days.
When it was time to wrap up the festivities, a horse race was held that attracted over 40,000 guests. These lucky guests had unknowingly showed up to what would become the world’s largest beer festival.
So now is the time to call up your friends, family, clients and colleagues to join you for an entertaining evening of German singing, drinking and dancing! Brush up on your German, bring your appetite, grab your lederhosen and dirndls and experience the spirit of Oktoberfest here in the heart of Guangzhou.
