Earthquake Activity on the Rise in Guangdong

According to the official determination by the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC), a 4.3-magnitude earthquake struck Enping, Jiangmen City in Guangdong Province on November 4 at 7.24pm local time. 

As of 8pm on November 4, five aftershocks have been reported, with the largest measuring a magnitude of 1.3.

The earthquake was strongly felt in Enping, and social media was abuzz with reports of tremors from users in cities across the region, including Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Macau, Hong Kong, Dongguan, Foshan, Yangjiang, Zhanjiang, Maoming, Zhongshan, and Zhuhai. 

At the moment, the Jiangmen government has not released any reports on casualties or property damage.

Remarkably, this earthquake marks the fourth to hit Guangdong within a one-month period.

Simultaneously, official data shows that Guangdong has experienced 13 earthquakes with a magnitude of 3.0 or higher since the beginning of 2023. 

Could Guangdong be entering an active seismic phase?

According to local earthquake experts in Guangdong:

The current data indicates that the region has entered a relatively active seismic phase. 

However, when looking at Guangdong Province and even the entire South China region, the current earthquake activity remains within the normal range. 

Furthermore, the likelihood of a magnitude 5.0 or higher earthquake in the Greater Bay Area in the near future is considered low.
