A college student and snake enthusiast in Fujian thought it would be a swell idea to have nine pythons in his house - local authorities disagreed, and he is now facing up to five years in prison.
The man bought nine python eggs online for a pretty reasonable RMB100 per egg. Just a short while later, he had nine 30cm-long snakes in his house - mission accomplished, right?
Unfortunately, local authorities and college administrators didn't share the student's enthusiasm. It is illegal to buy African snakes online willy nilly (it turns out) although it is legal to have them as pets if the buyer can prove that the animals/eggs were legally brought to the country.
Pythons are nonvenomous, but they can grow to be up to 120 centimeters long (about 4 feet) which is a bit large if, you know, you have nine of them in your apartment.
There is no word yet about the snakes' fates, although the Fuzhou "forestry regulator" has gotten involved, and the animals could potentially end up in a zoo. That's probably a bit more fitting than a dorm.
