The United States' ambassador to the Republic of Korea Mark Lippert was hospitalized yesterday after he suffered a knife attack in Seoul.

Lippert, 42, was attending a breakfast meeting at the Sejong Arts Center when he was slashed in the face and wrists with a 25 centimeter-long fruit knife. The attacker, a 55-year-old ultranationalist activist, was subdued by security officers and arrested.

The attacker, the head of a minor civic organization that espouses peace and reconciliation with North Korea, allegedly yelled that North and South Korea must be united before the attack.

The attack is believed to have been a response to recent military drills between the US and South Korea, which prompted Pyongyang to fire two missiles into the sea in protest.

Media reporters indicate that Lippert's injuries are not life-threatening US president Barack Obama has called to check up on the ambassador, who was previously a foreign policy adviser to Obama when he served as a senator of Illinois.

While national embarrassment has dominated the South Korean reaction to the incident, however, Chinese netizens have responded with positive glee. Here are the top three comments on the Sina news story in order of 'likes':

  1. Good. Really good. Very good.
  2. Well done!
  3. I really want to yell out one sentence: beautifully done!
