A 32-year-old man has died in an internet cafe in Kaohsiung after non-stop gaming for three days straight.
The man, only known as Hsieh, was a regular at the cafe where attendants would regularly see him slumped face-down in front of the computer when resting.
The man’s fatal condition was only discovered after a cafe attendant realised that Hsieh wasn’t breathing.
The man was taken to hospital and pronounced dead from cardiac arrest.
According to Hunei Police Precinct Chief Weng Chun-neng, the cold conditions in the cafe, as well as over-exhaustion from the non-stop gaming, were the likely causes of the man’s death.
This is the second gaming-related death to occur in Taiwan this year alone. Earlier, a 38-year-old man died after five straight days of gaming in an Internet cafe in New Taipei City.
Local police are working on spreading more awareness of the danger of gaming for extended periods.
Frequent customers of the cafe showed little interest in both of the cases, with authorities noting the customers were too involved in their gaming to care about the deaths of their brothers in arms.
