A young woman riding the bus home in Nanyang, Henan Province was harassed by a male passenger and later dragged off the bus, beaten and robbed - all without any other passengers or the driver lifting a finger to help her or even call the police.
The 22 year-old victim, surnamed Liu, told reporters that she stood up and asked the driver to call the police after the man sitting beside her started touching her, but the driver simply ignored her. Liu then tried calling her father, but her attacker pulled her back to the seat and took her phone.
Meanwhile, another man walked up and asked the driver to stop the bus, then pushed Liu out of the vehicle together with the assailant. Liu passed out on the ground after two men beat unconscious and made off with her purse and phone. She was later discovered by her father, who went out looking for her based on what she said over the phone.
One of the attackers was later caught by police but his accomplice remains at large.
Liu said that the bus was filled with passengers when the ordeal occurred, yet no one stood up and helped her. She even suspected the driver had some relation with the men who committed the assault.
The harasser, a 51-year-old man with several burglary convictions, has since been detained on charges of causing a disturbance. Local police are still going through CCTV footage and looking for witnesses. The man could be prosecuted for criminal liability if new evidence against him emerges.
The bus driver has also been suspended and is under investigation.
