A cross-province fake alcohol ring was busted by police in Chenzhou, Hunan this week. In the group's warehouses, they found over 50,000 bottles of bogus booze worth RMB 70 million.

The operation produced imitations of Erguotou baijiu, Wuliangye, and other liquors under nationally recognized brands like Red Star. The fraudulent firewater was then shipped off and sold as far away as Beijing and Guangdong, where they maintained secondary factories.

Li Xiaofeng, the ring leader, told police that they sold bottles of Erguotou worth RMB3 to convenience stores, restaurants and hotels for a RMB8 mark-up.

Although the alcohol content of the fakes was lower, no one could differentiate them from the real deal since they both tasted equally vile.
