In the Hunan village of Jinshi, located in Xiangtan County, local residents now swear by a unique health tonic: water steeped with dried cow and sheep dung, which they claim "can prevent and cure hard-to-treat cases," especially "gynecological ailments," and even cure cancer.

Over 20 households in Jinshi currently subscribe to "dung therapy," a method which was first popularized in January this year by fellow villager Old Lady Ma after she was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer.

After a year of hospital treatment with no improvement in her health, her son, working in Hainan, suggested the unconventional method that he'd heard of from a local barefoot doctor. Eight months of turd tonic later, Ma said she was feeling immeasurably better.

Villagers now collect fresh dung from the hills nearby, then sun-dry it, roast it, and grind it to create an easily dissolved powder.
