The Jiangsu provincial government has just unveiled a brand-new exhibition that aims to teach you a thing or two about good, clean governance. Building off the Fourth Plenum theme of rule of law, almost 200 examples of ancient Chinese torture devices are on display in the Huai'an equivalent to the London Dungeon.

Let's have a look through some of the highlights:

1. Tiger bench

A prisoner is placed on a long bench with a board against their back and head and is then tied down so their back is secured to the board and their feet and legs are secured to the bench. Bricks are then placed under the prisoner's feet until all the straps holding the legs down snap - or the prisoner's legs do, due to the excruciating over-stretching.

2. Standing cell

The standing cell forces a prisoner to stand for days and nights on end. The height of the cage is also lower than that of the victim, meaning that they can never stand fully upright. The pain caused by this unnatural posture is said to be so great that the thirst, hunger, and sleep deprivation become an afterthought.

3. Dropping stone/broiling

This inventive contraption actually combines two time-tested torture methods: the dropping stone and broiling methods. The victim is hung upside down from a beam by their feet with a large stone attached their hair. Meanwhile, a bed of hot coals sizzles just below their head.

4. Noodle torture

In this particularly twisted procedure, noodles become torture devices. The prisoner is first starved and then force-fed two big bowls of thick, half-cooked noodles. When the victim is hung upside down, the noodles then begin to come back up through the victim's mouth and nostrils.

5. Breast torture

Wooden planks connected by ropes are placed on the top and bottom of the victim's breasts, then gradually drawn together.
