Red lights are lighting up once again across Dongguan, mere months the government's anti-prostitution crackdown this February that came after CCTV aired an expose on the southern Sin City's sex trade.
A total of 60 suspects were detained in two karaoke bars last week for alleged involvement in sex trade, local police said.
The two karaoke bars have been ordered to close their doors for six months and will each be fined up to RMB 20,000.
Thousands of saunas, massage parlors and hotels in the city were closed down in the crackdown on prostitution that kicked off in February and which lasted three months. Nearly 70 percent of these businesses were then allowed to reopen in July.
The “sweeping the yellow” (yellow is a slang term in Chinese for erotic) operation was triggered by a CCTV report accusing the city authorities of allowing a huge sex industry to flourish in the manufacturing hub’s hotels and bath houses.
Dozens of police officials and a member of National People’s Congress have been suspended or removed from office on suspicion of protecting prostitution businesses.
The economy in Dongguan was hit hard by the crackdown on the once-rife sex industry, which was the engine that powered so much of its economy.
However, the third wave of the operation is said to have started last month and should be expected to last till the end of this year.
