A magnitude 6.6 earthquake shook Yunnan last night and has resulted in the death of at least one person and injuries to 324 others.
Centered in the Jinggu Dai and Yi autonomous county in Pu'er, the quake hit at 9:49pm on Tuesday evening.
56,880 people are said to have been displaced in the mountainous region in south-west China.
Xinhua reports that 3,200 troops and 600 professional rescuers have been dispatched to the affected areas, where many homes have collapsed.
The shallow quack was measured 6.0-magnitude by the United States Geological Survey, but the China Earthquake Networks Center gave a significantly higher reading of 6.6.
Yunnan is particularly venerable to seismic actively, frequently experiencing quakes caused by the collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates that form the Himalayas.
