Sichuan woman arrested after buying RMB300,000 of what turned out to be ghost money

A woman in Chengdu, Sichuan was arrested yesterday after she called the police claiming to have been conned by two counterfeit money dealers.

The woman, claiming to be the victim of a nefarious scheme, bought more than RMB300,000 worth of counterfeit money for RMB38,000. If that deal sounds too good to be true, that's because it all turned out to be ghost money, false currency traditionally burned as an offering for the use of deceased loved ones in the afterlife.

Let's hope, for her peace of mind, that the fakes weren't quite this obvious

If it's any consolation, while she's behind bars on charges of undermining finance order, the police are also trying to hunt down the two dealers.
