The real estate market may have its ups and downs, but the Tibetan mastiff dog-trade is a bubble that will never burst. Or at least that's what a Shandong company seems to be banking on, as it has invested heavily in the mastiff-cloning business.
Tibetan mastiffs are well known status symbols for China's wealthy, and the mastiff market frequently passes the million-yuan mark for the purchase of a single puppy. Seeking to capitalize on this trend, a company based in Weihai has unveiled its first set of Tibetan mastiff puppy clones.
The three cloned canines are genetic copies of Jiama, a mastiff that has won "several championships" for its breeding, according to Xinhua. No word yet on how much the Jiama-juniors will cost, but last year a pure pedigree mastiff puppy went for a weighty RMB15 million to someone who clearly had more money than sense a highly refined sense of style.
The Shandong company is the brainchild of Boya Life, from Jiangsu province, and the Sooam Biotech Research Foundation, from South Korea. This joint venture has just made China's first clones targeted specifically at a commercial market and I, for one, welcome our impeccably bred clone overlords.
