An elderly man in Baoding, Hebei held up a bus and blocked the road for two hours on Sunday, yelling “no one leaves” after he claims not to have been offered seat by any of the passengers already on board.
The man accused college students on board the route 61 of “lacking manners” and the driver of “not doing his job.” Meanwhile, at least seven or eight of the students on board claimed they had offered a seat to the man but he refused because he did not like the positions of the seats.
“Respecting the old and caring for the young” is considered a Chinese traditional virtue, but many senior citizens doing much to to earn that respect through incidents such as these. On September 10, an elderly bus passenger in Henan died after an altercation with a young man who refused to give up seat to him.
This incident came just days after a young bus passenger in Hubei was reportedly assaulted by five elderly passengers for refusing to offer his seat to them.
To avoid scuffles and tragedies like these, perhaps people could start bringing their own seats onto buses and subway cars? Oh wait, some are already doing just that.
